The film was a box office flop, and was received negatively by most critics. D'Abo had the supporting role of the Gypsy girl Catalina, who befriends the main character Ayre "Mac" MacGillvary (played by Bo Derek). Months later, the romantic drama film "Bolero" (1984) was released. The film earned about 31 million dollars at the domestic box office. D'Abo played Princess Jehnna of Shadizar, who Conan has to escort on a quest to retrieve the magical gemstone Heart of Ahriman and the missing Horn of Dagoth. The film was based on the "Conan the Barbarian" stories by Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936), with the main role reserved for actor Arnold Schwarzenegger (1947-). She made her screen debut in the sword and sorcery film "Conan the Destroyer" (1984), at the age of 14. She attended high schools in the Los Angeles area. D'Abo settled in the United States in the 1980s. Maryam is known for playing the Bond girl Kara Milovy in the spy film "The Living Daylights" (1987). Through her father, d'Abo is a first cousin, once removed of fellow actress Maryam d'Abo (1960-). D'Abo's mother was the model Maggie London. Her father was singer and songwriter Mike d'Abo (1944-), lead vocalist for the rock band Manfred Mann"'s Earth Band (1962-1969). The series lasted for 6 seasons, and a total of 115 episodes. Her most famous role was playing the free-spirited Karen Arnold in the historical television series "The Wonder Years" (1988 -1993). She debuted as a teenager in 1984, and has remained active over the following decades. Isn't it funny how times change? What was once laughable and disposable is now respectable.Olivia d'Abo is an English actress and singer from London. The basic story is reminiscent to the one told in CONAN, and the films violence is every bit as brutal. It receives generally good notices from critics despite it's historical inaccuracies, poorly edited action scenes and predictable plot. Eighteen years later, GLADIATOR becomes a box-office blockbuster in a matter of weeks, taking in almost one hundred thirty million thus far. Many of these battle sequences (as well as some of the costume design) bare just a little resemblance to the ones in CONAN THE BARBARIAN.
It is embraced by critics despite it's graphically violent battlefield sequences, which are praised as exhilarating and authentic. Thirteen years later, BRAVEHEART is showered with praise and Oscar respectability. It's brilliant score and memorable sets are ignored by reviewers, as is the well choreographed swordplay. It was criticized for it's excessive violence and Arnold's wooden performance. Back when it was originally released, CONAN THE BARBARIAN was dismissed by the critics as a disposable Sword & Sorcery B-movie.
